Why hearing beats seeing

Sound reaches the brain's response centres through fewer synapses than vision: the auditory pathway runs ear → brainstem → motor areas, while visual signals detour through the visual cortex first. The saving is typically 20–40 ms, which is why sprinters react to the starting gun and not a lamp — and why your score here should beat your visual test by a similar margin. If it does not, suspect Bluetooth audio latency, which can add 100–250 ms and silently wreck the measurement. Wired earbuds or speakers give the honest number.

Getting a fair audio score

  1. Run the sound check first and set a comfortable, clearly audible volume.
  2. Avoid Bluetooth audio for record attempts — use wired output.
  3. Rest your finger on SPACE and keep background noise low.
  4. Do not anticipate the beep; the 1.5–5 second window punishes guessers with Too Soon restarts.
  5. Compare all five rounds, not your luckiest one — the average is the score.

FAQ

Audio reaction FAQ

How does the audio reaction test work?

Each round waits a random 1.5–5 seconds, then plays a short beep generated with the Web Audio API. Timing starts exactly when the sound plays and stops when you press SPACE or tap.

Do I need sound on?

Yes for the real test — use the sound check button first. A visual flash fires at the same moment as a fallback so the test still works silently.

Are audio reactions faster than visual?

Usually yes. Auditory stimuli skip some visual processing, so most people score 20–40 ms faster than on the visual test.

Does Bluetooth delay my score?

Yes — Bluetooth audio commonly adds 100–250 ms of latency. Use wired earbuds or speakers for an honest measurement.

What if I am hard of hearing?

A visual flash fires at the exact moment of the beep as a fallback, so the test still runs — treat that score as a visual result, not an audio one.
