Spacebar test tips

Use one finger with a steady rhythm rather than mashing with your whole hand — it is faster and less tiring. Timing uses performance.now(), and your keyboard repeat rate does not matter because only real key presses count.

Why the spacebar is a fair speed test

Unlike mouse clicking, every keyboard has the same giant target, so the spacebar test compares finger speed with almost no equipment advantage. The main variables left are technique and stamina: alternating two fingers can beat single-finger mashing, and the 30-second mode exposes who paces themselves. Because key events bypass pointer hardware entirely, this is also a useful cross-check — if your spacebar PPS far exceeds your mouse CPS, your mouse (not your hand) is the bottleneck.

How to press faster

  1. Use the tip of your index or middle finger, striking straight down.
  2. Try alternating index and middle fingers like a butterfly click.
  3. Keep the rhythm even — frantic bursts early always collapse before the timer ends.
  4. Rest your palm on the desk edge so only the finger moves.
  5. Stop immediately for any sharp wrist pain; speed records are never worth an injury.

FAQ

Spacebar FAQ

How do I take the spacebar test?

Press Start, then hit the SPACE key as fast as you can until the timer ends. On mobile, tap the big TAP button instead.

Why does the page not scroll when I press space?

During the test the page temporarily locks scrolling and disables the default spacebar behavior so every press counts.

What is a good spacebar speed?

Most people reach 6–8 presses per second. Above 9 PPS is fast, and double-digit speeds are outstanding.

Does holding space count as presses?

No. Only real individual key presses count — keyboard auto-repeat is ignored, so you must physically hit the key every time.

Why is my spacebar score higher than my mouse CPS?

Common: keyboards have lighter, shorter-travel switches than mouse buttons. The gap usually points at your mouse, not your reflexes.
