What is WPM?

WPM (words per minute) uses the standard rule that one "word" equals five characters including spaces. Only correct characters count, so accuracy matters as much as raw speed. CPM (characters per minute) is the same score without dividing by five.

Typing speed benchmarks

  • Up to 20 WPMBeginner — still looking at the keys.
  • 40 WPMAverage typist — comfortable for everyday work.
  • 60–80 WPMFast and professional — touch typing territory.
  • 100+ WPMElite — years of practice with high accuracy.

How to type faster

  1. Learn touch typing with all ten fingers instead of hunting and pecking.
  2. Keep your eyes on the screen — glancing down breaks your rhythm.
  3. Fix accuracy first; speed follows once mistakes disappear.
  4. Practice in short daily sessions rather than one long grind.
  5. Use the 60-second medium test as your standard benchmark run.

FAQ

Typing FAQ

What is WPM?

Words per minute, using the standard 5-characters-equals-one-word rule: WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. It is the universal way to compare typing speed.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 20 WPM is beginner, 40 WPM is average, 60–80 WPM is fast and professional, and above 100 WPM is elite — all assuming 95% or higher accuracy.

What is the difference between WPM and CPM?

WPM counts words (5 characters = 1 word) while CPM counts raw characters per minute. CPM is simply WPM × 5. Both only count correct characters here.

When does the timer start?

The clock starts on your first keystroke so you can read the text first. Backspace is allowed; corrected errors still cost you time.

Does accuracy matter more than speed?

Yes. Only correct characters raise your WPM, so a careful 60 WPM at 99% accuracy beats a sloppy 80 WPM at 85%. Slow down slightly and your score usually rises.

Which test length should I choose?

15–30 seconds measures burst speed; 60 seconds is the standard for comparable scores; 120 seconds tests stamina and consistency.

How can I type faster?

Use all ten fingers with touch typing, keep your eyes on the screen instead of the keyboard, practice in short daily sessions, and fix accuracy before chasing speed.

Do I need to register to save my score?

No. Your best WPM is stored locally in your browser and shown on every visit. Your full attempt history lives on the history page.
