How to hunt a dead key

Press every key deliberately, row by row, watching the virtual board. The usual suspects are the far corners — Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause — and one random letter killed by a spill. Modifier keys (Shift, Control, Alt) light on press and must be tested on both sides separately. If a key never lights, try it in another app first: a dead key everywhere means hardware, while a dead key only here means the browser or OS swallowed it (check shortcuts, input methods and accessibility features like Sticky Keys).

What the speed sprint tells you

The 10-second sprint counts raw keypresses per second, which blends finger speed with keyboard scan rate and USB polling. Membrane keyboards typically cap around 8–10 keys/sec of clean input; mechanical boards with 1000 Hz polling go higher. If your sprint number is far below your typing WPM, ghosting or a low poll rate is eating inputs — common on old laptop keyboards.

FAQ

Keyboard test FAQ

How do I test my keyboard?

Just press keys — each one lights up on the virtual keyboard. Keys Tested counts every press, Keys Lit counts unique keys. Best on a physical keyboard (desktop).

What is the speed mini-test?

A 10-second sprint counting every keypress. It saves keys-per-second to your history when it finishes.

Does this work on mobile?

The virtual keyboard lights up from hardware keys, so touch keyboards only partly work. Physical keyboard testing works best on desktop.

A key works in games but not here — why?

Games read raw input while browsers apply OS shortcuts first. Check Sticky Keys, input-method hotkeys and browser extensions that grab keys like F12 or backtick.

What is key ghosting?

Cheap keyboards drop simultaneous presses beyond 2–3 keys. Hold A+S+D+F together: missing letters mean ghosting, which also hurts gaming and fast typing.
