Visual Memory Test

Cells light up, then hide. Reproduce the exact pattern as grids grow from 3×3 to 6×6.

  1. 1.Press Start Test and study the highlighted cells.
  2. 2.Click the same cells once they hide.
  3. 3.Level up to bigger grids. Three mistakes ends the run.

Why growing grids are a different skill

Small-grid memory is about holding positions; large-grid memory is about compressing them. On a 3×3 board you can track individual cells, but a 6×6 board with a dozen lit cells overwhelms item-by-item tracking — you must perceive clusters, lines and symmetries instead. That switch from tracking to pattern compression is the real skill this ladder trains, and it transfers to reading charts, scanning dashboards and remembering faces in a crowd. Expect a score dip each time the grid grows; recovering on the bigger board is the training effect.

Visual memory tactics

  1. Divide big grids into quadrants and memorise one quadrant at a time.
  2. Look for symmetry first — mirrored halves halve what you must store.
  3. Trace the pattern with your eyes in one smooth path, then replay the path.
  4. Click the cells you are surest about first; confidence order reduces slips.
  5. Accept the three-mistake budget strategically — one early slip is cheaper than panic.

FAQ

Visual memory FAQ

How does visual memory scale?

You start on a 3×3 grid. As you level up the grid grows to 4×4, 5×5 and 6×6 with more highlighted cells. Three mistakes ends the run.

How long do I see the pattern?

About one second plus extra time per highlighted cell, so bigger patterns get proportionally more viewing time.

What is a good level?

Reaching level 6–8 with growing grids is a strong visual memory. Anything past level 10 is excellent.

Why did my score drop when the grid grew?

Normal. Bigger boards force a switch from tracking cells to compressing patterns. Scores recover after a few runs on the new size.

Is this the same as photographic memory?

No — it trains working visual memory, the scratchpad you use for directions and layouts, not permanent photographic recall.
