How the reaction time test works

This free reflex test and reaction time game measures your reaction speed and human reaction time across five rounds. After you arm a round, the screen waits a random 1.5 to 5 seconds so you cannot predict the signal. Timing starts with performance.now() the instant the area turns green and stops on your click. The average human reaction time on a simple visual stimulus is between 200 ms and 250 ms.

Reaction time benchmarks

  • Under 180 msExceptional — re-test to rule out anticipation.
  • 180–220 msExcellent — faster than roughly 9 in 10 people.
  • 220–280 msAverage adult range on a visual click test.
  • 280–350 msNormal, especially on trackpads or older phones.
  • Over 350 msBelow average — check focus, sleep and your setup.

How to get a faster, fairer score

  1. Use a real mouse on a desktop — trackpads and touchscreens add latency.
  2. Rest your finger lightly on the button instead of hovering far above it.
  3. Look at the whole test area, not one corner, so the green change hits your central vision wherever you look.
  4. Take five calm rounds rather than one lucky attempt — the average is the honest number.
  5. Close heavy tabs and pause downloads; a busy browser delays both display and input.

FAQ

Reaction time FAQ

What is a good reaction time?

Most people score between 200 and 300 ms on a visual click test. Under 200 ms is excellent; under 180 ms is exceptional and worth re-testing to rule out anticipation.

Why did I get a "Too Soon" message?

You clicked before the screen turned green. The round restarts automatically — wait for the green signal, then click as fast as you can.

Are browser reaction tests accurate?

They use the high-resolution performance.now() timer, but results can be affected by your device, display refresh rate, browser, mouse/keyboard, and network/device latency.

How is consistency calculated?

Consistency is the standard deviation of your 5 rounds. A lower number means steadier reactions across rounds.

Why do my scores change between devices?

Display refresh rate, input latency and browser load all shift results by tens of milliseconds. Compare scores measured on the same setup for fair trends.

Is it better to do one fast round or five steady ones?

Five steady ones. A single round can be luck; the 5-round average plus the consistency figure shows your real level.
